Avalanche gives you a choice of three naming conventions for your width class names: fraction ( 1/4 ), percentage ( 25 ) or fragment ( 1-of-4 ). No need to spend time working out how many columns are in your nested layout - if a cell needs to take up half the width of it's container, tell it to!

You tell Avalanche which widths you require and it'll create just those ones for you, keeping your compiled CSS lean and free from bloat classes you'll never use. If you need just halves, thirds and quarters then tell Avalanche to only use those. If you need all the way from one to 12 columns, Avalanche can handle that too.

When compiling your width classes, Avalanche checks for duplicate widths and bundles together matching selectors meaning that your width classes are as efficient as possible. No bloat here.

Avalanche utilises inline-block to create flexible grid layouts that aren't hindered by always being anchored to the left- or right-hand edge. Align your grids left, right, top, middle, bottom and back-to-front (yep, really!) with just a single class on the grid container.

Based on the dimensions of popular mobile devices , Avalanche's breakpoints target real-world values for shifting content. No snapping from desktop to hamburger menu at 1024px.

As with its width classes, Avalanche's breakpoints are pre-defined - by you - for greater control and efficiency. If you need a new breakpoint, simply add an alias and a value to the settings and Avalanche will do the rest.

Avalanche includes a simple media query mixin for use within your stylesheets. Use the same breakpoint alias as your width classes to target specific device widths in an easy-to-understand way. No need to remember to add a pixel onto your min-width values.

Nest as many grids within each other as you like without issue. No padding nightmares or calcuating how many columns equals a quarter of a '6-of-12' column here. Right-aligned grid inside a center-aligned grid? No problem!

Avalanche includes a media query mixin that makes use of the breakpoint aliases you set. This enables better coupling between your grid and other responsive content items. Usage as follows.

All modern browsers are supported and Internet Explorer from IE9 upwards. If IE8 support is required then all that is needed is a pixel-value to be set for font-size on .grid__cell . This is due to IE8 not supporting rem units. Use of autoprefixer is recommended which will handle this for you automatically.

The British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study is a nationwide reporting mechanism to determine the epidemiology and outcomes in rare orthopaedic diseases. BOSS is based on other successful reporting systems in obstetrics (UKOSS) and Paediatric Surgery (BAPS-CASS.)

BOSS has been developed with a nationwide collaborative of children’s orthopaedic surgeons, and is currently focusing on Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) and Perthes’ Disease.

BOSS is based on the methodology of the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU), which has developed an effective mechanism for surveillance of uncommon disorders in paediatrics.

Descriptive, case-control and cohort studies are conducted through a prospective, monthly case-collection scheme. Each month, up to four nominated individuals (e.g. the orthopaedic audit lead, paediatric orthopaedic lead, nurse specialist (i.e. children’s/ hip fracture nurse) and an orthopaedic trainee) are asked to notify cases of the diseases under investigation. At the end of each month details of cases reported will be sent to the nominated lead, who will be asked to verify the completeness of the data – using a simple electronic ‘tick box’. If no cases are reported it is important a nil return is confirmed.An electronic case report form is used to capture the details of each case. The data collection form seeks confirmation of the appropriate case definition and additional information on risk factors, management and outcomes according to the protocol relating to each condition. BOSS largely collects anonymised information only. Some centres also collect identifiable information and PROM data – these centres are ‘open’ on the NIHR portfolio. The BOSS methodology is undergoing ethics committee review.To maximise case identification patients, parents or any doctors can identify a case to be reported, and the BOSS team will follow-up with the lead clinician within the relevant centre.Monthly sweeps will also be undertaken of hospital episode statistics to identify new cases of diseases recorded within national statistics, and the lead clinician contacted where cases have not been recorded within the BOSS study.

The era of big data will lead to systems necessitating the transport of large amounts of information. Today's high-speed I/O signaling links are faced with difficult challenges: pins and interconnects available for off-chip signaling remain almost constant, while the throughput needed is increasing and the required aggregate bandwidths are moving into the Tb/s range (with target bit error rates as low as 10-21 for memory links).

High-speed chip-to-chip communication has historically been considered less critical than the on-chip signaling performance; however, due to today's huge demands for data throughput, off-chip interconnect bandwidth is increasingly becoming the system bottleneck, and creative solutions are needed to meet the requirements, now measured even in terabytes per second for graphic processing cores. Due to manufacturing and technology limitations, the physical dimension scaling of the passive package and interconnect systems is unable to keep up with the rapid miniaturization benefits enjoyed by active devices (such as silicon chips in CMOS technology nodes) which is dictated by Moore's law. Therefore, the resources (pins and interconnects) available for off-chip signaling remain almost constant, while the throughput needed is increasing. This trend is expected to persist in the future. At the same time, in order to keep up with the data throughput needed over limited resources, high edge rates are being used for signaling. This causes various signal integrity impairments, which in turn limit the system performance and force the data rates to be well below the Shannon limit of the channel capacity. Coupled with the limited channel resources are the conflicting requirements of low power and extremely reliable signaling . All of these limitations combined call for creative solutions in order to keep up with the performance demands of next-generation systems.

In our research group we investigate how these changes will affect the different aspects of high-speed link design. We develop modeling and simulation strategies as well as techniques for mitigating noise while reducing power.
